Hotel Dania and Silkeborg are inextricably linked...

Silkeborg is one of Denmark's best situated towns and there are two buildings in particular which have set their mark on the town more than anything else. One is the old paper mill which Drewsen founded in 1844 and which the town grew up around. The second is Hotel Dania, which was founded on June 17th 1848 by the innkeeper Jens Heegaard Mikkelsen Grabow and his wife, Katrine. After they passed away in 1876, Hotel Dania had 5 different owners until 1960 when it was bought by Ellen and Eduard Jørgensen. Since then the hotel has remained in the family.

Today the paper mill is closed down. However, Dania has stayed ahead for 165 years and today more than ever is able to satisfy the most discerning guests from both near and far.

Hotel Dania's famous guests

Authors, internationally known painters, Danish actors and politicians have stayed and eaten at the hotel over the years. Danish national treasure Hans Christian Andersen repeatedly made the long trip from Copenhagen to Silkeborg as did the diva of the Royal Theatre Johanne Louise Heiberg, and of course, they stayed at Hotel Dania. In a letter to her friend A. F. Krieger, Heiberg praised the comfort of the rooms and the attentive service.

Silkeborg grew up around Hotel Dania

Silkeborg grew up around Hotel Dania and it quickly became the place where people met. Over the years many famous people visited Silkeborg, and whether or not they received an official reception
at the town hall, each received the benefit of Hotel Dania's unique setting and service in their own way.

Tourism also rose to great importance for Silkeborg. In 1861 "Hjejlen" began to sail on the Silkeborg lakes. In 1859 Hans Christian Andersen visited Drewsen and was captivated by Silkeborg's beautiful scenery. His poem "Jutland between the two seas" describes the lakes and forests around Silkeborg as "Highland with forest solitude."

Central location in the middle of the Square

The hotel provides the perfect setting for meetings, conferences and weddings, communions, christenings and birthdays – and last but not least for individual accommodation for the busy business traveller.
